Ford Mustang Mach-E Design & Powertrain
Despite the name, the Ford Mustang Mach-E isn’t a sports car, but an all-electric SUV. There’s a battery in the floor – either 77 kWh, or 96 kWh in the case of the Extended Range version. Ford also the choice of rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive or a GT model.
Thanks to the bespoke electric platform and the SUV body style there’s a big boot of 502 litres, which increases to 1,420 litres with the rear seats folded. In addition to the boot, there’s a storage compartment at the front under the bonnet. The Mach-E is a five-seater, but the rear seats sit quite a lot higher than the front seats.
The interior follows the currently fashionable minimalistic theme, with a large central touchscreen dominating the dashboard.
There are no traditional door handles on the Mach-E; instead you press a small button and the door pops open. As well as being able to unlock the car with a key, you can do this using a keypad on the driver’s door frame, or you can use your phone.
What's the Ford Mustang Mach-E like to drive?
The Ford Mustang Mach-E shares some of the qualities of the driving experience of the Mustang sports car, including good performance delivered in a laid-back and comfortable way. This driving experience gives the Mach-E a degree of differentiation in the marketplace.
The ‘entry-level’ rear-wheel drive Mustang Mach-E has a 0-62 mph time of 6.9 seconds, which is perfectly sufficient for an SUV. The all-wheel drive model, with its dual electric motors, accelerates from 0-62 mph in 5.1 seconds – and the GT model, with a massive 860 Nm of torque, can do this sprint in just 3.7 seconds. So you can’t really fault the Mach-E’s performance.
Thanks to the battery in the floor, the Mach-E has a relatively low centre of gravity for an SUV, so minimising the body roll when cornering, and you can enjoy rewarding rear-wheel drive handling with the entry-level model – or increased levels of grip with the all-wheel drive models. Like most EVs with large batteries, the Mach-E weighs around two tonnes, which ultimately has an impact on a car’s agility.
The ride quality is good and the Mach-E is a very comfortable car on long motorway journeys.
There are three drive modes - Whisper, Active and Untamed - which are accessed via the car symbol at the top right-hand corner of the central touchscreen.
The gear selector is a rotary dial with a button in the centre marked ‘L’, which is for increased regenerative braking.
Charging the Ford Mustang Mach-E
The official WLTP combined driving range for the Ford Mustang Mach-E Standard Range RWD is 273 miles, which is likely to be around 240-250 miles in real-world driving. There’s also an Extended Range Mach-E with a 96kWh battery with an official range of 379 miles.
The Mustang Mach-E Standard Range can charge at rates of up to 115kW. A 10-80% charge takes 38 minutes at a 100 kW rapid charger; a 10 minute charge can give 73 miles of range.
The Extended Range Mach-E has a faster DC rapid charging rate of up to 150 kW.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E price and model range
The Ford Mustang Mach-E Standard Range RWD price is £47,530. The AWD model is available from £61,480, and the GT costs £68,030.
Conclusion
The Ford Mustang Mach-E is available with rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, or as a GT model. Depending on which model you opt for, the Mach-E will either offer good performance or extremely rapid performance, and a decent driving range or an excellent driving range. The Mach-E is also comfortable, as well as having a practical SUV body style. But the Mach-E’s main selling point is that its price represents good value for money compared to many rivals.
