Volvo ES90: The fastest charging and longest range Volvo EV yet
Volvo has unveiled its latest fully electric model, the ES90, a premium saloon that sets new benchmarks for charging speed and driving range. Featuring cutting-edge 800-volt technology, the ES90 can add up to 185 miles of range in just 10 minutes and offers an impressive driving range of up to 435 miles on a single charge.
The introduction of an 800-volt system represents a significant advancement for Volvo’s electric lineup. Compared to the more common 400-volt architecture, this higher voltage enhances efficiency, boosts performance, and, crucially, slashes charging times. When plugged into a 350kW ultra-fast charging station, the ES90 can reach 80% charge in just 20 minutes—30% quicker than previous Volvo EVs.

Every component of the ES90’s electric system has been upgraded to support 800 volts, from the battery cells to the inverters and climate control system. The result is not only a faster charging experience but also improved overall efficiency and a lighter vehicle, which contributes to better acceleration and an extended driving range.
Anders Bell, Volvo’s Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, highlighted the significance of this upgrade, stating: “Our 800V technology marks another significant technological upgrade for our customers as we move towards full electrification. It makes our electric cars even more efficient, helps you charge your electric Volvo faster and go farther on a single charge.”
Sustainability at the core
Volvo has also reinforced its commitment to sustainability with the ES90. The vehicle incorporates a significant amount of recycled and natural materials, reducing its overall carbon footprint.
- 29% of all aluminium and 18% of all steel used in the ES90 is recycled.
- 16% of the interior materials come from recycled polymers and bio-based sources.
- The wood panels inside the cabin are sourced from FSC-certified wood, ensuring responsible forestry practices.
Additionally, the ES90 will come with a battery passport, leveraging blockchain technology to track raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and graphite. This initiative provides customers with transparency regarding the origin and environmental impact of the battery components.
A new standard for premium EVs
Designed to offer a premium driving experience, the ES90 combines advanced electric technology with the comfort and practicality that Volvo is known for. The model is built for long-distance travel, ensuring reliability and convenience for drivers who require both efficiency and peace of mind on the road.
The Volvo ES90 will be officially unveiled on 5 March 2025. As the demand for long-range, fast-charging electric vehicles grows, Volvo’s latest model demonstrates the brand’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of EV performance and sustainability.
