CrowdCharge data shows smart charging and V2G can slash EV running costs by 80%
Switching to an electric vehicle (EV) could save UK drivers up to £1,000 annually compared to petrol cars, thanks to smart charging and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, according to recent data from DriveElectric’s sister company, CrowdCharge.
The average cost of charging an EV at home is around £600 per year—already half the £1,205 cost of fuelling a petrol car. But CrowdCharge’s smart charging technology can reduce this to £400 annually. Even more impressively, V2G users can slash costs to just £250, or potentially charge for free when combined with home solar energy systems.
V2G technology enables EVs to store electricity and sell it back to the grid when prices are high, dramatically lowering overall charging costs. CrowdCharge’s trials with home-based Nissan LEAF drivers and its V2VNY workplace project highlight the growing potential of V2G to make EVs even more cost-effective.
Cost and carbon savings for fleets
Fleet operators stand to benefit the most. By adopting CrowdCharge’s AI-driven smart charging, fleets can reduce annual charging costs and cut emissions by up to 63%. Advanced carbon reporting and optimisation tools further boost environmental and financial savings, with some organisations achieving CO2 reductions of up to 89%.
Future-proofing fleets with V2G
CrowdCharge’s innovations align with the UK’s push toward net zero. The company’s V2VNY project, supported by Innovate UK, is pioneering the next wave of V2G technology using AC charging, which promises to be more affordable and accessible.
By reducing energy costs and reliance on grid upgrades, this technology is set to revolutionise how businesses and individuals manage EV energy use.
With the cost of living on the rise and growing pressure to reduce carbon emissions, now is the time for fleets and individuals to embrace the financial and environmental advantages of EVs.
